A portrait of Albert Schweitzer and the students who learn about him.

Doctor Schweitzer’s Practical Heart celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon, Africa. It springs from the enthusiasm of Annisquam Village Church music director, Kathleen Adams, for its founder, Albert Schweitzer. We explore both sides of his unusual career as missionary doctor and world renowned concert organist and Bach specialist. What intrigued me was the practicality with which he accomplished his spiritual goals. We agreed that we would alternate Schweitzer’s words with Bach’s music. We asked Duncan Nelson - with his great voice and feeling for words - to play Schweitzer. The children's choir and the Annisquam Village Church organ round out the players. As I meditated on this notion of spiritual practicality and watched Kathleen work with the young singers, I imagined a classroom lesson. A kind of collage developed: the great doctor who built a world out of his deepest feelings and the students and teacher who learn about him. In words and music.
